‘Tales From the IT Side’ is a personal blog.
Unless I explicitly state otherwise, the views and opinions expressed here are my own. They do not represent those of any employer, former employer, client, company, organisation or institution with which I may be, or may previously have been, associated.
This site is neither sponsored nor endorsed by any of them.
My thoughts and opinions inevitably change from time to time. This blog therefore provides a snapshot of what I thought, believed or knew at a particular point in time. Some articles on here are now more than twenty years old, so expecting every opinion, technical recommendation or piece of software mentioned in them to remain current would be optimistic.
I reserve the right to learn things, change my mind and occasionally discover that I was spectacularly wrong.
The site contains links to websites, blogs and other resources operated by third parties. They are provided because I found them useful, interesting or relevant when the article was written. I have no control over those sites and accept no responsibility for their content, availability, security, products or services.
Given the age of some of the material here, there is also a reasonable possibility that an external link which once led to a useful technical article now leads to a Chinese gambling site, an expired domain or absolutely nowhere. Such is the Internet.
A substantial amount of technical information is published on this site, including configuration changes, scripts, software recommendations and modifications to computers, networks and other devices.
Anything you choose to do as a result of reading it is done at your own risk.
Before changing anything important, make sure you have a working backup and understand how to reverse what you are doing. If you destroy your operating system, database, router configuration, motorcycle electronics or civilisation generally because somebody on the Internet suggested typing something into a terminal, responsibility ultimately rests with the person sitting at the keyboard.
That includes me when I’m sitting at mine.
Every reasonable effort is made to ensure that this website and any files made available through it are free from viruses, malware or other malicious code. No guarantee can be absolute, however, and sensible security precautions remain your responsibility.

Finally, an historical note from the original version of this page:
“God take care of the Queen…!”
Queen Elizabeth II died on 8 September 2022 after seventy years on the throne. I wrote at the time that I hoped history would not regard her death as the beginning of the end of the British Monarchy.
History is still working on that one.
